As someone that has used OBS for many years, it is amazing to see how far it has come. With support for multiple streaming services, plus local recording (which we often use for creating user tutorials), it has been an amazing tool to use for streaming educational/informative content for work. With multiple scenes and sources setup and bound to keyboard shortcuts, I can quickly switch between them to ensure the viewer sees exactly what I need them to.

Pros

Incredible number of features
Easy to setup and use
Support for many different streaming services
No costs involved

Cons

If you have little or no technical knowledge, you may require some help to get started as it can be a little confusing. This, however, is true of most streaming software.

Overall, OBS Studio is an outstanding free streaming tool that makes it easy to create and stream professional quality content. The intuitive interface and wide range of features make this software a great choice for any content creator.

Pros

OBS Studio is an outstanding free streaming tool that is full of useful features and is incredibly easy to use. It is packed with a wide range of options for streaming, recording and live broadcasting, making it a great choice for content creators. The interface is intuitive and user friendly, allowing you to quickly set up and start streaming with minimal effort. The software is also highly customizable and can be tailored to meet your specific streaming needs.

Cons

One negative aspect of OBS Studio is that it can be a bit resource intensive, causing some performance issues and sluggishness on less powerful machines. Additionally, the software can be a bit daunting for beginners, as some of the more advanced features can be difficult to understand.

If I was still streaming on Twitch, I would still be using OBS. I tried Streamlabs after trying OBS but didn't like the way it ran. Too many hiccups .. so I definitely recommend OBS for streaming.

OBS is also REALLY amazing if you want to record a webinar that you are working because it allows you to record your screen.

Pros

I used OBS for streaming on Twitch. I liked that I was able to integrate my own layouts and have them show up on my screen. I also loved being able to change back and forth between scenes.

Cons

OBS is challenging to use. I had to watch several YouTube videos to make sure I was connected correctly. I feel like OBS should come with a user manual to make it easier for tech noobs.

Pros

Well works on Linux and Windows, once past the setup curve you can leave it as a set and forget tool for others to use

Cons

The profiles could use some work eg I use different output resolutions for different jobs. It would be nice that one profile is set for all settings needed for a particular job including all the scenes and sources for that profile including hotkeys and so on. So you could set one profile up copy and base a new profile with way different sources and scenes and output resolution

I absolutely LOVE OBS Studio. It's like a gift from the heavens. It's completely FREE with the option to donate to its development because it is an open source program. All it took to get started was to watch a few how-to videos on YouTube for the setup I was going for and BOOM! We're in business.

Pros

OBS Studio is FREE. Let that sink in. It also does more than other paid software I've used in the past (Bandicam). I can screen record and live stream it to social media platforms. If I need to capture the audio coming out of my Digital Audio Workstation, I simply have to put a plugin called Reastream from ReaPlugs at the end of my master channel to route the audio out of my DAW and into OBS Studio.

Cons

It can be a little tricky to setup how you want it but YouTube has a plethora of how-to videos showing you how to setup OBS Studio in various configurations.

Pros

The output compression of files is amazing and happens almost instantaneously as you record. The final Output of a HD session is very small at 60fps and this is awesome.

Cons

Tie-ing It All Together

Reviewed on 31/12/2021

Pros

It's ease of use. We have a production team that, may I say, are not the most technically advanced but are able to follow simple directions. OBS Studio allows us to easily record our Sunday services directly from the Google Meet streaming service presented on the OBS Studio laptop. Once Google took away the ability to record (this was removed for non-profit accounts), we switched over to OBS Studio, and have been happy ever since.

Cons

No Cons about the software. The only Con is that we have to use another piece of software to record our Service instead of a direct download from Google Meet. OBS has come through for the last 16 months.

The Recorder and Broadcaster's Homeland: OBS Studio, the Free Resource

Reviewed on 19/08/2020

OBS Studio is the successor to the original Open Broadcaster Software (OBS) application, delivering...

OBS Studio is the successor to the original Open Broadcaster Software (OBS) application, delivering a lot of serious Quality of Life benefits to the software and allowing for a more Professional Grade look while also not having nearly as many problems as the original OBS suffered from; while OBS Studio suffered in its earlier years because many of those who adopted to this from the original OBS were on noticeable lower end hardware (such as myself), the performance handicaps that it suffered from have only dissipated over time as computer hardware evolved and allowed for more accessibility; now plentiful games, applications, and videos that were attempted to be recorded and/or aired using the software five years ago are noticeably easier to run now and that is essential towards the future of its life going forward.
In 2016, I personally used OBS Studio to get back into Live Broadcasting, with me even recording the first and only North American commentary of Star Cruiser (Sharp X68000) on the application in July of 2019, and with the improvements that have come as it evolved, I can easily recommend OBS Studio to anybody getting into any form of Yellow Collar work; it may require some messing around with the settings to optimize certain projects, but the end result will always pay off far better than anticipated, it's not often that one finds free resources such as this and OBS Studio will forever remain on your person if you need to record or go on the air without a hitch.

Pros

~ Virtually Lossless recording quality when capturing footage locally in any available framerate and resolution provided by the software.
~ Plentiful visual effects and the ability to layer multiple images and clips allows for a Broadcast Quality and Professional Grade template and appeal for any project or Live airing.
~ Customization of User Interface themes allows for proper Eye Care when in Dark Mode.
~ Users of the software who are running an Intel CPU that has QuickSync will see a reduced load on their Graphics Card by about 05% to help improve performance and stability in GPU~intensive workloads.

Cons

~ RAM consumption is high and not meant for modern systems with 016 GB or less without the proper CPU and Graphics Card combo.
~ Users who have a CPU and Graphics Card with a low core/thread/pipeline count, frequency, and VRAM can expect noticeable framerate dips and massive performance instabilities, especially when using hardware that is running on older architectures.
~ Footage may occasionally get inexplicably cropped Horizontally when imported into Vegas Pro and other video editing software for Post~Production.
~ Not fully compatible with all forms of Video Capture devices, Webcams, and Professional Grade Cameras (though there are workarounds for some forms of hardware).

Why didn't I know about this sooner!

We had struggled through live streaming using a different studio for several years. We continued to have problems, because with the software we were using they limited us on the quality of the video unless we started to pay a yearly fee. On top of it, we had troubles with bugs in the system. I consulted with other people in our vocation and 90% of them pointed to OBS Studio. Once we started using this software we have never turned back, it was exactly what we needed and it has worked BEAUTIFULLY without any hiccups. We recommend it to everyone who is live streaming their services and concerts.

Pros

For live streaming our services, this has become the most valuable software we have ever used in our church and in recording videos. It was simple to set up, easy to use, and other than the occasional user error in the sound room at our church, we have had ZERO problems with this software.

Cons

There are features that I would love to be able to use on the software, but not having too many technology inclined people in the church has made some of the features for us useless, but that isn't a negative on your part, it just isn't something we can use at this time.

I am an artist and designer and have recorded many time lapse videos, as well as art process videos, wherein I record my screen. That is just scratching the surface too, you can take it so much further. Screen in screen, switching on the fly from one screen to another for live broadcasting, custom overlays and inserts, the list goes on and on! This software is free and incredible. I cannot recommend it enough!

Pros

OBS Studio is amazing. First of all it's FREE. But quite honestly it is my go-to for screen recording over my built-in Quicktime screen recorder (on Mac) because of the versatility, quality control, ability to customize, and so many more features.

Cons

It can be complicated at first, but there are plenty of online tutorials and guides to get you up and running quickly.

Reasons for Choosing OBS Studio

I switched from using my computers inherent screen recorder (Apple Quicktime) to OBS Studio because I wanted more control over what I was recording and how I was recording it. OBS did NOT disappoint and in fact gave me more than I could have even imagined.

Reasons for Switching to OBS Studio

Honestly PRICE was a huge motivator, but unlike other situations, OBS wasn't stripped down and just a basic free app, it was just as robust as you could have hoped for with a paid app. Plus there is a huge devoted community to OBS as well.

Overall i've found OBS to be a great free streaming software. For the purpose of streaming its fantastic with all the 'bells and whistles' next to the paid version that are out there. I've used it in both capacities for streaming gaming to twitch, as well as an educational stream over twitch through both schools and colleges.

Pros

The fact that OBS Studio is free and open source. It has tons of support and a very well rounded community backing its use. Any issues using the software is quickly solved by the great cupport community. Other than this the software is very intuitive and easy to use, especially if the main purpose is streaming, and screen sharing across a stream.

Cons

The issue I had with the software was calibrating OBS audio so that there were no delays in the streams audio. The good thing about this however, is there is a built in audio delay where you can purposefully delay someones audio so it matches the delay of other person streaming or recording. Not only is audio delay and issue, but audio sync with the video being streamed, but this has got far beter with each version update.

OBS is great for streaming and recording!

Overall, using OBS has been a really good experience. Once you begin to learn the ropes and get an understanding of what the terms mean and the ways that they can affect streams and recordings, it becomes a very valuable tool for content creation that streamlines a lot of the finer details of a streaming and recording setup and allows one to focus on making content.

Pros

OBS is software that really helped to make my streams and recordings really simple to manage.
I stream and record most of my gameplay from Xbox One and with OBS I am able to use a simple set up to add personality and flair to my streams. I can also integrate OBS into my operation to stream to places such as YouTube, FaceBook, and Twitch using overlays which aren't provided natively by the Xbox One console which really helps one to stand out amongst other streamers. Set up is relatively easy because the OBS software has features that can detect what you have available and set itself up based on the specifications that it detects.
When it comes to recording, using the capture software allows me to add overlays and things such as watermarks to content as it records as well as set up audio options such as microphones and the levels of audio that it records.
Getting help is quite simple since there are many forums and other ways to find information and tips online as well as turotials provided by the developers themselves.

Cons

What I liked the least about this software was probably trying to understand what some of the options would do once I began to explore the program and options that it offers. Being new to streaming at the time, it was more or less a problem not having a good understanding of how to set things up overall.
Once I spent some time browsing forums and the other sources of help regarding OBS, I found that it was pretty easy to understand how to adjust things as I needed to.

At first I could not understand the settings of OBS Studio, but after practicing it several times, doing live broadcasts, adding effects and adjusting settings each time, I was able to get an excellent experience from it, it is enough that it is free and offers very high quality sound and picture

Pros

Yes, there are many programs that offer screen recording, but the problem is that some of them are free and paid and the free programs do not contain enough features to inspire you to use them, so I will shorten the topic for you and tell you about the wonderful OBS Studio program that contains features that I love and use a lot on my device and all of this Open source and free
An easy-to-use and flexible program that offers you high-quality audio and video, and does not take up much space on the device as it is very light and does not pose any weight on weak devices, and supports live broadcasting on more than 20 different platforms, before saving the broadcast, you can also use various video editing tools to edit it.
One of the features that I liked and used a lot is the feature of adding audio filters directly during broadcasting without the need to use external programs, in addition to the presence of many filters for image improvement, color correction, and others.

Cons

Sometimes while doing a live stream with OBS Studio, the stream gets stuck from minute to minute, after which it goes back to working fine
There is also difficulty in the beginning to adjust the settings, but after practice you will get used to it

Positive, I have been a streamer since Starcraft 2 came out and will continue to be one into many more games. This software is amazing for being free.

Pros

For a free product this is what I use to stream. I like that it is pretty simple to use, easy walkthroughs, it's pretty much click, click ready. But the best feature has got to be how easy it is to make each layer overtop of the other. My stream has 6 layers Game,Webcam, greenscreen, followers screen, donation screen, and gamer tag. Each super easy to set up and super easy to maintain.

Cons

I don't like that it is very demanding on your pc when you start running everything through it, but then again it is a streaming software, and free so who am I to complain.

Overall OBS is an excellent software for both recording and live broadcasting, besides being free it offers the best features available on the market, it is worth mentioning that the negative points are related to the difficulty that the software presents for certain settings and for the user who is starting, as well as the lack of a profile setting that saves the scenes and styles so that the user doesn't bother changing computers.

Pros

Excellent quality recording with a quick response to capture, making the transition smooth and sharp. The input and output audio quality settings are impeccable, bringing a better experience to live broadcasts. Excellent response on connections to other servers for live broadcasts.Excellent compatibility with third-party tools that integrate many new features into both recording and broadcasting.Easy to manage the location of the recording files, as well as the formats.

Cons

Difficulty to make some integration settings.Difficulty applying the configuration saved in the software when reset.Lack of an option to save all the integrations and scenes configured in the profile, so that regardless of the computer the user uses, the user always keeps the configuration saved.

When COVID first hit and we were trying to keep some form of "contact" with our members during the shutdowns, one suggestion was to do some sort of "virtual class" to at least keep us engaged with and communicating with our members. Being a last-minute sort of idea, the implementation was very lacking. Zoom is a fantastic conferencing software, but for the purposes of broadcasting a live exercise class it was not working well. I was then tasked with "Upping the production quality" of our offerings.

We used Youtube as our streaming platform, but that was only fixing part of the problem (even though the hardware side of things were improved greatly as well). Seeing as a mix of inexperienced users would be manning the helm eventually, we needed a flexible, but easy to use solution and OBS came to mind. I had used it personally for livestreaming games before, so I was decently familiar with it. I did most of the scene and source setup for the users, but once things were set it was very simple for them to use. Going between waiting video, to intro video, to live footage looked smooth and professional. The options for multiple camera angles and mixing streamed audio with captured audio also enhanced our offerings tremendously. The amount of improvement stunned not only our members, but leadership staff as well. You also can't beat it for the price, either!!

Pros

High flexibility, very robust feature set, the price is unbeatable (free for some people's purposes), and it is highly customizable.

Cons

Learning curve can be a little steep for new users, takes some time to setup scenes and sources if they aren't done already, with this many features and options there can be several points of failure, or it can get confusing if not decently experienced with it.

I use this app when playing games to show my friends, sometimes I turn on stream mode when I feel a little lonely in the game or when I am having a little fun.

Pros

The program is easy to use, once you have completed the required settings that fit your computer's parameters, it remains to select the broadcast source and broadcast source and then start the process. There is no limit to adding videos and other elements, and it is possible to save a local file to your computer during the stream. The program allows you to select a full-screen mode or a specific area, and you can further control the process by using hot keys, which is very convenient and saves time.

Pre-installed popular streaming platforms, including Twitch, are available in OBS settings, but you can manually add addresses and make other changes. Audio is recorded from the microphone and the internal channel of the computer, and it is possible to adjust the volume, for example, to add another background sound.

Cons

The disadvantage of the program is the inability to broadcast simultaneously with several resources and incompatibilities with legacy operating systems (Windows XP), as a result of increased functionality, increased power of the computer, but owners of old computers can help the classic version of the software.

I have used OBS for years and love that it is constantly changing and evolving. I use it at work and at home and found it to be one of the first programs I install on any computer I use. The fact that it is free makes it even better.

Pros

The ease of use is what I like about this product. There are times when I need to customize the layout of what I am trying to record and it's great for putting things in layers. It is easy to set up and start recording or streaming with just a few layers to setup.

Cons

The part of OBS that might need a little work, is the "decks". When I stream twitch one of the decks would be stream information. If I close that deck down and try to find it again, it's not easy to find. So I have to close down OBS and reopen.

You can hide screens/videos as well—which is useful if you want to have multiple screens/videos in the same spot of the screen. You can stack them on top of each other, hide all of the screens/videos and play each screen/video one by one. Hopefully that wasn’t confusing to read and understand *laughs* but it is a genius software for all of your screen capturing/recording needs! I personally use this for Twitch and would have my Xbox screen, Safari screens and a Google Chrome screen all showing on my main screen in my own way! I would have my Xbox screen and Safari screen on top of each other, and whenever I wanted to display the Xbox screen I would hide the Safari screen and vice versa.

Cons

It did take a little bit of YouTube video watching and Googling to adjust certain settings with my MacBook, as its easier to use with a Windows computer. For instance, to audio capture into OBS Studio with my MacBook, I needed to install an audio capturing software called SWB Audio Capture and select the multi-output option in my Mac’s audio settings—selecting my microphone and SWB only and deselecting the MacBook audio. Then going into OBS Studio’s audio settings and selecting SWB Audio Capture as the Output. So it does take special adjusting to work with a MacBook, but it is very possible.

I have been using it for more than 2 years; from my experience it is a very useful application, especially for content creators who are just starting out and do not have the economy to purchase similar paid applications or software.

Pros

Among the things I liked the most is the possibility of recording multiple screens, also the opportunity to choose the quality of video and audio to record to have the video size at our convenience. As for its ease of use is really impressive, you do not need to be an expert to do it, because its interface is very intuitive, plus once configured everything runs faster.I use it to record classes and at the same time do live broadcasts. I recommend it 100%.

Cons

The only downside I find is that it does not have a support that is pending to help the problems that the user has, otherwise it is a great application.

In general, it is a really powerful program, and it contains a lot of things and tools that help you in capturing anything, whether for a window and recording it, or for a game, aho for a web page, and recording or creating a broadcast through it. It is really a very special program that offers a lot of advantages

Pros

From my point of view, the advantages of this program are many and different. First, ease of use. Secondly, it can record windows, display devices, capture, game recording, capture audio input and output, has a capture browser, and also has a video capture device and image slideshow, which helps all content creators anywhere. video. Capture the screen to the players or go live and broadcast it live.

Cons

One of the negatives that I encountered when recording games at the highest quality is that it consumes a lot of the processing unit
