The best Guitar Tab Tool out there

Guitar Pro is one of the best notation tool out there. It is easy to handle and fun to play with. There are some problematic elements but it doesn't affect user experience in a critical way aside from some minor disgruntlements.

Pros

Most of the notation tools makes notation look and feel very complicated and eerily impenetrable. But Guitar Pro makes it seem easy and completely approachable - which is very important for those making their first steps in music composition.

Guitar Pro is probably one of the most accessible notation tabbing tools out there. It is extremely easy to master and very comfortable to use as a lean mean composition tool. It is especially useful if you have limited music education and just want to lay down your ideas.

From the user experience perspective - it doesn't get any better. If you know the notation basics - it will take a couple of minutes to get around Guitar Pro's interface. The way the composition process is organised is very streamlined and allows many tweaks without getting tangled.

Ever since the 5th version introduced realistically sounding instrument samples, Guitar Pro also became a very interesting tool for sonic experimentation. Sure, it is very limited in comparison with a full-fledged digital workstations - but it offers an interesting experience, especially from a 6th versions which introduced sound effects.

Cons

User interface might seem dense at first and it takes some time to get used to it.
From a compositional standpoint - every instrument that is not fretted string one - is limited to the guitar-based tuning. Basically it limits the composition process to laying down the basics while fleshing out will require more specific software.
The notation layout itself is somewhat clumsy and got some very irritating traits.
Hot keys are messy and you often get confused over which combination does what. It is not critical but might bring you some discomfort.
Version 6 and 7 often crash, especially if you try too hard with the RSE.

If you need to communicate an idea with other fellows musician who is not trained in music reading, its a powerful tool, since it has this tab only option, so the musician you are sending the music does not have to focus on anything else than the rhythm and fret positions of the notes you are suggesting.

If you happen to be a music teacher, this program is EXCELLENT for helping your students to train their tempo, help them play with an accompaniment and get used to the metronome and a regular tempo

Pros

Using the tab/instrument view is really useful to notate the tones of your guitar into a tab/sheet music, and the compatibility with many other strings instruments(Ukulele, Bass, banjo) make it easier to transport your ideas to other players, even if they are really far from you.
The printing options are awesome too, if you can't afford a printer, you just export your tab/sheet score into pdf format and then can send it to any place so they can print your parts or chord charts.
Also, the playback/loop option is EXTREMELY helpful whenever you encounter a hard to learn, it allows you to go from really slow to the exact tempo you are looking for, so, for practicing your instrument is a really awesome tool.

Cons

There are a few things that can be improved, for example, if you happen to be a producer or an orchestra/band composer, guitar pro will limit you the way you write your music, it does not have a natural flow when it comes to transport instruments(say, many of the brass and woodwind family) so, it might get confusing whenever you have to write something for a trumpet or alto sax player.
Also, the playback or RSE (real sound engine, which is basically an emulation of a live instrument) is not that good enough, compared to other software that is around nowadays, most of the time I prefer to use the midi default playback, because it can get too noisy and unproportioned.

I've always chose Guitar Pro for my guitar tablature needs.

Pros

Built-in MIDI
Fast, lightweight.

Guitar Pro makes notation a breeze. Musical notation will always seem like a daunting tast, but GP makes it simple. The interface is pretty intuitive when it comes to this specifically.

Cons

I don't remember what version number it was, but I'm not the biggest fan of the overall user interface. While the main portion of the program (musical notation) is straightforward, the rest of the program became very convoluted.

Helped my church to save a lot of money. Great customer service that provided the best solution for our needs. In my personal use, there's A LOT of music written in guitar pro files on the internet that you can get for free, probably written from the original music books that now are almost impossible to be found (and complex stuff, like Dream Theater, just to give an example). They have also launched a service where you can buy popular songs and learn how to play them.

Pros

About the software functionality: It was and has become even more user friendly to write, edit and play music scores. Not only that: it includes a Chords library that you can use in every single instrument (mainly focused on guitar, adding at the beginning of the score all the chords used). You can make it as simple as you want: tablature, chart or pentagram...or why not, all of them! It includes a great library of RSE instruments that will help you imagine what your music sounds like. Export your score as midi and use it on your recording software on VST instruments. And it's absolutely affordable!
About the customer service: Few years after I started using it at home I started to write music for my church which doesn't have a lot of money to spend on very specific software like this. However, we needed more than one license so we contacted them. Their interest truly was to help us and yeah, completely helped us to get exactly what we needed. Best people on Earth!

Cons

It might rarely crash but it has been improved a lot with the years and updates. Just keep saving all the time as you should with any software you use and you'll be fine. Also the RSE sounds for winds are not good, they're just to give an idea. The interpretation of dynamics is weird mostly when changes are extreme but again, it's not designed to sound like a VST.

Great Way to Simulate Your Music

I have used this software since 2009 and I have been happy with the improvements and the commitment they have made to creating a sound engine that sounds authentic.

Pros

I am able to create scores of music using either tab format or standard music format and then I am able to simulate the sounds of the band or orchestra through the software. There is no limit to the amount of tracks one can use, whether it is guitar, violin, drums, and even a didgeridoo. You can save your different scores and files within a cloud that is accessible on a phone app to take your music on the go. The Sound Engine has been improving over the years and I believe is almost at its peak.

Cons

I wish there was a way to change effects on a single track like a phaser or delay at a certain point in the songs instead of having to create a separate guitar track with that effect attached to it, it kind of makes the process somewhat tedious. It is very minor in the grand scheme of things, but still.

I love this tool and i used it since more than 10 years and im still using it.

Pros

What i really like about Guitar pro is the simplicity of using it the design of the interface and what is really amazing if you are for example a musician and you don't have any idea about notes etc you can literally use your ear to write your tabs cause any number in your keyboard can turn into note that you can hear at the same time you write it then you can export that to share it with your band or export the midi file and drag it to your daw change instruments ..etc really awesome.

Cons

What i like the least about it it s the sound of instruments in it that can maybe be a motivation for the dev team is that why not sampling real sound of instruments in the app ? that would be really amazing.

5 star experience. I got guitar pro way back in 2006 the day after getting my first electric guitar. It's come a long way since then but is still something I use daily and is probably the most consistent piece of software I've ever used.

Pros

As a learner, Guitar Pro is the #1 practice tool any player could have and has countless helpful features. As a teacher, I have used guitar pro to create individual lessons and musical examples for all of my books - it's invaluable!

Cons

the only thing that is missing is the ability to set up pages with text boxes or to have an inbuilt word processor similar to Sibelius.

Pros

The amount of music notations and tabs written in Guitar Pro format is unmatched. The possibility to play along and even include one or more instrument as backing tracks is a very useful tool.

Cons

Conversion between MIDI and GP formats is not possible. The distinction between sharps and flats when transposing is not nicely done.

This software give me the chance to write music too fast, even when i had not too knowledge of music. It allows you to write like string pressing way, giving a good way to save all your ideas in a faster way. The option that have some tabs open is a good plus because it give you the chance to see more information whitout leaving the same screen.

Pros

This product is really good to write your songs fast. It allows a large number of variants of instruments that gives you versatility at the writing time. The new versions (6 and 7) are a little bit more complicated to locate all the panels, but once you got the way, the process is more simple than before. A light weight product that helps you to write music with a correct syntax, fast and efficent. The option to add sound banks is a great add-on to create music with a characteristic real sound.

Cons

The user interface is not too easy to understand at first time, it took some minutes to know where are all the sets and how to use it. Adding to it, the RSE (sound bancks) some time are too heavy and the software turns slower.

The experience is great! it is easier to practice when having a reference tune to follow, and also to edit your tabs is great since it lets you have your own versions of the songs.
I have improved my skills and song repertory since using this tool

Pros

As a guitar player I love the fact that I can practice the songs I want to learn and the software provides a lot of tools that help with that, the ones I love the most to use is the tempo, in which if I need to go slower it will go and play on a slower tempo and highlighting the notes, in that way I am aware of what I am playing good or bad.
Also the fact that I can edit the tab for a better playing for example, a D note you can play it on the 4th string or on the 5th string so if by some reason the sequence of notes that you are playing, ask to be more comfortable to play it on the 5th string you just go ahead and edit the tab to your convenience to have a better playing.
Also it is not only for guitar, the songs comes with a package that if you have a band you can split on the different instruments, Drums, Bass, etc and practice by separate using the tracks feature which I really love since it lets you start by your self, but the helps you to get use to the rest of instruments that regularly is a challenge

Cons

Besides being and Engineer I am a musician so it is easy for me to use it, but when I recommend it to someone that is learning or starting it turns to a complex tools to use, so it should have a little of a a more friendly interface for new musicians learning.
Also the midi sounds are not a high quality and sometimes if you are really picky you will here a delay on drumms,

Awesome Tabs That Help You Learn Music

Guitar Pro is extraordinary compared to other music notation devices out there. It takes some time to learn but it's easy to use once you get the hang of it. There is a large range of sounds and options that make this software better than it's competitors, but you'll need to put in effort to learn the user interface and find sounds that are the perfect fit for your project.

Pros

I love Guitar Pro! It encourages me with my guitar lesson plans and putting my music to paper. It has a ton of choices to make life simpler and works admirably at that! I like the Tab-altering too. It changes the game of writing music and it's functionality is excellent. It's very easy to learn and use so I would highly recommend it!

Cons

Sometimes the UI is frustrating to deal with. It can be difficult to find the correct choice or apparatus to match your song. It can take some time to discover the right sounds; maybe a big longer than some of it's competitors. I feel the program is very useful for music creation, but the drum sounds and mixing options are somewhat limited as well. All in all, the interface can be a bit confusing to learn, but with time, you'll be able to figure it out and make songs that sounds professional.

Cons

It has some bugs considering midi playbacks, sometimes the sound starts to overlap.

I am using Guitar Pro for many years. It keeps improving, new features are added. Has everything I need in a guitar practice/composing tool

Pros

It is easy to use and so popular because it allows users to transcribe and compose in tabulature format with playback capability (you may playback in various tempi for practice). You can write multitrack projects and play them back (eg. guitars, bass and drums). This feature worked well over a dozen years ago (nearing two dozens in a few years) and got polished over the years.

Cons

One thing I wish was better designed is the official tab portal (MySongbook). I remember it was quite alive early in this century, when they allowed users to share and upload their tabs. Now there is Ultimate Guitar, where you may find and share everything you need and MySongbook seem to be quite dead in comparison.

I absolutely love Guitar Pro, it allowed me the opportunity to learn instruments independently at my own pace.

Pros

Guitar Pro makes it fun and easy to learn how to play a new instrument. With this software, I learned how to play guitar and the electric bass fluently. It is perfect for first time learners as well as continuing musicians. Guitar Pro comes loaded with features to help you transcribe your music into paper, backtracks/playback to help improve rhythm, and interface which is essential for recording guitar tracks.

Cons

Many would argue that Guitar Pro is costly, considering that their are other guitar apps which are free of charge on Google Playstore. However, Guitar Pro comes equipped with far more advanced features and better sound quality, which makes it worth every penny.

I really loved Guitar Pro, I bought it years ago for me and my son but my son really took off in the music field and learned to write beautiful music starting with this software. We used tab and chart and has a nice store of musical instruments to choose from. I thing as far as musical programs you can buy you can't go wrong with this one.

You can export your music and lay down multiple tracks. The software just really is fantastic for learning to play, learning to compose and as a teaching tool. The fact that they improve it so much as the updates keep coming is just another testament to how great it truly is.

Pros

I bought this program years ago and it just grew as I progressed in the music field. I was easily able to open and set up the program and get started right away. I like that it continued to add more options and selections in sound as the years went by.

Cons

I struggled at first finding things and found it lacked a nice easy interface in the beginning. It took time but as I learned to write music as well as read music that I loaded in it became easier.

Guitar Pro is great for creating and editing sheet music of all kinds. I used it specifically for piano, which didn't pose much of a problem despite the name of the software.

Pros

I picked up a free trial of Guitar Pro a while back when I considered writing my own music. I play the piano, so I was worried that the software would have its limits, but it functioned quite well for me! Guitar Pro lets you create and edit sheet music to your hearts content, and contains all of the necessary symbols, clefts, beats, and notes you might need. I'm a casual musician, so I don't have a burning desire to use any over-the-top mechanics, but the fact that they are available is nice.

Cons

I used the free trial, so I didn't get to utilize all of the software before said trial ended. But I enjoyed what I saw.

Very powerful, but is it really needed?

Pros

Guitar Pro has evolved a lot since it's first edition. It now features a depiction for virtually anything one can do on a stringed instrument, and its sound banks make it sound pretty much like the real thing. Guitar Pro is not only an application to help you play along an existing work, it is now also a compositional tool.

Cons

With all that being said, I have to say Guitar Pro is not the tool I personally need anymore. It helped me evolve to the point I do not need it anymore, and this is the reason I have stopped using it. I now use a certain open-source alternative that I do not have to pay for, which just shows me the tabs and plays along for me to practice. Perhaps they should replace their time-limited trial with a lite version. All that being said, Guitar Pro is still the best high-end score writer for guitarists.
