I have used Excel for over 20 years and I have not even scratched the surface of what can be done with it. It can do so many things when you need to make calculations, spreadsheets or do something with accounting. I love it and really for me a numbers guy I think it is fun.

Pros

It is so versatile. I use it instead of Calculator as I can easily see what I am calculating. I have made a simple payroll system with it and have used it for many weekly tax calculations. Calculating using fields from other pages is fantastic. Really anything you need to do with accounting can be done with it.

Cons

Two things if you don't have it free with your computer then you have to buy it and it can be kind of expensive and if you want to be able to collaborate and make on the fly changes with others then you need office 365 and you have to pay monthly you can never own it.

LibreOffice and Google Sheets

Reasons for Choosing Microsoft Excel

While LibreOffice is the best option for free and that is a software for your computer, my wife ended up getting Microsoft office 365 free from work because of remote work so this is the main reason I have gone to excel as it is a little better and I didn't have to pay for it.

Reasons for Switching to Microsoft Excel

I do still use google sheets for mine and my wife's budget and we can change it on the fly at the same time if we need online. I used LibreOffice as my main until I got Office 365 from my wife's work. I think Excel is better than the other two in sheer offline and spreadsheet features but not sure I would pay more than about $50 for office 2019 and don't like paying monthly for 365.

I enjoy using and learning more about Excel. There are so many ways in which to use it that no review can truly capture the breadth and depth of its capability. When it is frustrating it is because of an inability of process or lack of me as a user being able to achieve what i know to be possible and thus I approach it as a puzzle to be unpacked.

Pros

Excel is a versatile spreadsheet application that continues to benefit from its age, the weight and momentum behind it, and the continued focus on it as core Office app. The variety of applications of this application are what continue make it a winner.

Cons

Stemming from the same positive attributes of its age and flexibility are the downsides to its age and flexibility - its overlapping years of feature additions and subtractions to the building more on top of pre-existing structures mean that somethings need to be unpacked in order to work how you'd like them too and the robustness of the product can be daunting. Knowing that you'll never know ALL that it is capable of and that the best way to achieve anything is to picture it and then hunker down for an evening of searching and learning.

The familiarity of administration and staff in using Excel and the ease of interaction with other organizations sealed the deal.

It's been my partner when it comes to keeping track with my finances both personally and business-wise. I don't see myself changing for anything else.

Pros

I have Microsoft Excel both in my laptop and my phone. I love the easy way to create formulas and keep track of my finances everywhere I go.

Cons

I actually have no complains. I have been using it for over 15 years now and I'm always learning new ways to use it.

Overall I love Excel for the variety of inbuilt functions that help you make models. I have heavily used Excel for my Ph.D. research in the last three years, and I can assert that Excel still has new functionalities that I have not discovered yet.

Pros

Excel is one of the most powerful tools that is used daily in Fortune 500 corporations. From simple graphs and tables to complex VLOOKUP functions that I use daily, Excel can be used in home, offices, and schools. I find Excel extremely useful to store and manage data. Excel can handle every large data sets and is very intuitive to conduct simple data analysis and visualize it. I have been using Excel for more than eight years now, and I can vouch for the plethora of functionalities it provides to make our lives easier. From making Pivot Tables to conducting sensitivity analysis in my financial research models, Excel is a one-stop solution for quick modeling work. I have found that sometimes, it is much easier to transform and clean data in Excel rather than writing complex scripts in Python or MATLAB.

Cons

Excel's way of indicating errors in your formulas aren't always helpful to figure out the exact source of error. Plus Excel doesn't have an inbuilt autocorrection to check for spelling errors. You must double-check the spellings in your Excel model/document before sharing it with anyone.

Spreadsheet Data Management & Analytics

It is great for simple data and quick data filtering. It can quickly fix issues if you are using it for inventory editing and can come in handy for stand alone projects. If you add a lot of different equations in it or use it for larger data, it can become a pain using it. Since it is program on your computer and not cloud based, it can out perform tasks that competitors would struggle with that are cloud based.

Pros

This software is a company standard use for a lot of other programs. It can filter data, create .csv files for upload and download of data, and handles equations to help with data analytics. There are a lot of guides on this program online if you are struggling with a problem and there are plugins that you can use to help make your job faster. Many companies have this as a standard so sending files to others is usually not a problem.

Cons

It is not meant to be used as a database for large data. It can lag out after you get to 60K lines of data. The biggest issue I have with this program is that it likes to convert large number text to scientific notation and you have to constantly do workarounds to prevent it from happening. It has some minor glitches if you have too many different files open at the same time. It is not the greatest with group collaboration because the files are meant to be used as one user at a time. You have to also manually save your files from time to time as you are working. Although you can often times get your file back if it wasn't saved and the program shuts off, it still is a practice you have to get into a habit of doing.

Alternatives Considered

Airtable, Microsoft 365 and Google Sheets

Reasons for Switching to Microsoft Excel

Excel has a longer standing in managing data through sheets. Often times, I would switch between Google Sheets for other projects that require group collaboration. The fact that it is not cloud based and some other program integrations require it makes it difficult to fully get rid of.

As an Operations Manager of a small company I wear many hats in what I do on a day to day basis (Accountant, CFO, COO, Projects Manager, etc). I use excel to analyze financial data, create/monitor projects, oversee day to day operations, and many more tasks. I wouldn't be able to do my job without Excel and would highly recommend that every organization take advantage of what this software has to offer.

Pros

This software is absolutely essential to my job on a day to day basis. The amount of functionality this software has is incredible (far superior to other products on the market). What I love most about this software is the way you can take raw data and create a formula, algorithm, graph, chart, etc that can tell a very detailed story. As an operations manager of a small company I have to wear many hats and all of my projects typically begin and end with Excel. Even though this product is more expensive to other free alternatives on the market, I would still consider Excel a must-have within any organization.

Cons

The price can be a determining factor for some people given there are free alternatives on the market today, but I would still recommend getting Excel because in the end you are getting more than what you pay for. There is a bit of a learning curve when it comes to using this software but there are numerous amounts of instructional videos online on how to use some of the complicated formulas this software is capable of. However, with a little bit of practice you will be able to interpret raw data with ease.

Alternatives Considered

Google Slides, WPS Office and Apache OpenOffice Calc

Reasons for Switching to Microsoft Excel

I chose Excel over these alternatives simply because of the amount of functionality Excel has to offer. I enjoy the User Interface Excel offers and Excel is also more compatible to other devices, programs, and softwares than anything else on the market.

We have been able to solve a lot of business problems with Microsoft Excel. Below are some of the obstacles that we are able to overcome at workstation.
1. Financial reporting
2. Creating appealing spreadsheets
3. Carrying out data entry projects
4. Realization of arithmetic operations- Formulas on this software help us in such areas.
5. Statistical sampling

Finally, I would highly recommend Microsoft Excel to all those individuals that are looking to save time and energy while carrying out some vital business operations like financial reporting.

Pros

To begin with, I must disclose that I have been using Microsoft Excel for more than six years +. In the midst of Microsoft Office suite, Excel is my favorite solution which has helped me to excel and is yet to do a lot. What I like about Microsoft Excel is that it is easy to install, setup, and reset up even with a little knowledge. Due to that, it is not necessarily to get comprehensive training in order to be a pro- since there is tons of tutorials in the entire internet. Personally, I used Excel in campus to solve some calculations, mainly repetitive calculations since it has all the tools for such capabilities. Nowadays, Microsoft Excel is one of the systems that help me to save time and energy since I am able to create, format, and edit spreadsheets. In addition, I like this software since it is available as both on-premise and cloud-based solution. With cloud-based solution or what we call Office 365, it is easy to work from anywhere provided there is stable internet connection.

Cons

Although Microsoft Excel is the most advanced platform for carrying out data entry projects, it gets offered at a higher license cost per user. To make it competitive on the market, Microsoft should ensure that it increase the number of individuals that can use one account. Alternatively, Microsoft can reduce the total cost of getting a genuine Microsoft Excel. By doing that, they will be in a better situation to entice a lot of prospective customers, especially small businesspersons. Finally, the fact that Microsoft Excel is not available on its own is among the issues that I like least about it.

In my experience I started using Excel to create my school hours and after university, then in college I gave application for results of reports and database creation with records that I should take, in my current job I must work with Excel to generate the calculation sheets with the full staff that will attend each day, plus the notes when they are evaluated are downloaded in excel sheet from the application that is used for the purpose of the evaluations, in addition to possible presentation of reports and dynamic dashboards that it must generate for the management with respect to my part of the work.
The reality my experience has been satisfactory and I am always comfortable working with excel.

Pros

Excel is a tool that I have always liked because in addition to presenting a pretty nice design in its latest versions, its features allow you to take thousands of benefits, from list of products with prices, to generating lists of nominees to know how much you should charge each month, these applications can even be optimized through its powerful tool such as MACROS, which allows us to apply programming to optimize processes that must be performed very frequently. We can not let go that allows us to generate accounts reports to our liking, allowing the possibility of using the graphics that best fit for our presentation, this just to mention one of its valuable applications. The reality Excel has become a valuable tool for many processes within a company, since their applications are endless. Its simplicity to handle it makes that anyone with a little practice can handle it quickly

Cons

The tool has evolved a lot, providing many advantages today that make it have few negative details, so I think that although it can still improve, I do not see very negative things that should be highlighted.

Organize Your Life

In the last 12 months I've had nearly 90 doctor visits and medical tests scheduled. I don't like to use a calendar so I created a scrolling spreadsheet that tracks date, time, doctor’s name, purpose, etc. when I book a new appointment I just put it at the bottom of the list, highlight all future appointments and sort. It automatically inserts my appointment in the proper place. After I've gone to an appointment I simply change the background color. This makes appointments so much easier and I can also go back and refer to appointments I've had in the past. I also like to collect silver coins. Every month I buy a few coins and on my page I have a button that connects me to a website that gives me the current silver spot price. I have projections on what my investment would be at different prices and every time I change the spot price or add more coins it changes everything on the spreadsheet. These are just a few of the things I do to stay organized. In the old days I had things written down on sheets of paper thrown in a box, it would take me forever to find what I was looking for. Those days are long gone. And none of this has even touched on how I use Excel for my business.

Pros

Of course I use Microsoft Excel for my business but now I also use it to organize my personal life with great success. I created a book with 16 pages that keep track of different aspects of my life. I'm a cancer patient so needless to say I have many medical issues to oversee. I have a page that tracks my appointments, one that tracks all my doctors’ phone numbers. I have a page for all my medications and even a page that records my monthly walking mileage. With Excel it's easy to create spreadsheets that can manage just about anything you want. I've been using Excel for more than a decade and I use it every day. The formulas are very easy to use; they ask you intuitive questions and then insert the answer properly in the formula. I also enjoy colorizing the pages I create, and adding my own personal touch. I highly recommend Microsoft Excel not just as a business application that is a way to manage your entire life.

Cons

Microsoft Excel does so much it can seem overwhelming and intimidating. The key is to just use it for what you need, but if you do need a complex formula, Excel can do it. The program itself has a good help menu and there is plenty of online help. There are amply online forums and you can also contact Microsoft itself for answers. Excel Can also be a little pricey but if you get it as part of Office 2019 or Office 365 it has much more value. In the Office bundle, besides Excel you get Word, Publisher, Outlook and with 365 you get cloud storage.

The gold standard spreadsheet software for a reason.

With such a versatile software, there are definitely areas of possible improvement. The good side is that Excel is not hampered by these tiny blips; it definitely is possible to work around these limitations and annoyances quite easily. I will say that I find some of the features to be less intuitive than other spreadsheets, but the customization abilities and integration of Excel into popular software modes can't be beat.

Pros

This is a must have spreadsheet software; it's used everywhere for a reason. From making simple charts to making sortable lists, everyone from temporary summer students at the office all the way to the IT department all use Excel for their various needs. The built in functions allow for basic "automation" of different calculations so that you don't have to do it by hand. More advanced users can design macros in VB to integrate advanced functions and forms into the spreadsheet. It also copies and pastes into different Microsoft applications like powerpoint and word for seamless coordination between programs.

Cons

There are so many different functions that it can be overwhelming to orient someone at first. However, it is easy to use the simple functions of the software immediately; it's just the advanced functions that take time. The problem that I always have is resizing rows or columns - you can input a numerical size, but it means absolutely nothing - I don't know what the units are, whether it's pixels, or just some arbitrary size. Additionally, the automatic formatting is awful, especially when it comes to inputting ratios in the format X:X. Excel converts them to completely unreadable jibberish, and even when I reformat the cells to be text, the next person I send it to often has the same issue - they'll see jibberish like 010542349080398 instead of the ratio that was input.

Excel - an irreplaceable tool to store data

I use Excel for a large array of projects. Here are the most common utilisations. Excel is a simple but highly effective tool to keep track of my freelance income. Add the months of the year on the first row and insert the money generated during each month. From now on you can calculate the average monthly revenue, expenses, create graphics to visualize the income, profit, and so on.
At the same time, I use Excel at work to create basic databases. Excel is golden to create lists of sites, group them depending on various criteria, keep track of leads, customers, and write a few math formula when needed.
Briefly, Excel simplifies my life considerably and I hardly believe that any tool can replace it.

Pros

I can’t recommend Excel highly enough. The biggest advantage is its complexity - it helps you from doing simple math operations to create complex graphs or write basic programming concepts (IF/THEN). It's probably the best spreadsheet software and as a result is an irreplaceable tool for many businesses. Paradoxically, even though it’s a complex tool, Excel is relatively simple to use. People who previously used Microsoft Word and PowerPoint won’t face big problems when using Excel.
I like the most to create pie charts or any visual - these says more than a plethora of rows and columns. Excel is the best at this chapter.

Cons

Using the basic functions of Excel is simple. However, getting the most from this amazing tool is pretty challenging. Excel is jam-packed with useful features and some users might face troubles. There are tons of YouTube tutorials or Udemy courses teaching you how to use Excel like a pro. Check any of these courses if you want to become an advanced Excel user.

Easy Office Tool to create Complex Tables and Charts

Reviewed on 23/12/2019

I typically used Excel to solve the business problem of measuring incremental impact of marketing...

I typically used Excel to solve the business problem of measuring incremental impact of marketing campaigns - did those campaigns drive incremental or new customer growth or did they sell new food or restaurant products which were not purchased prior to the campaign. Excel allows me to visually show trend in total cases sold by month so I can show to category team and vendors if there was an year-over-year lift in cases of items targeted in campaigns or in the overall category to which those items belong. Excel charts enable easy visualization of incremental customer or product growth by creating charts.

Pros

Microsoft Excel allows me to import thousands of rows of marketing data from web analytics software. I can then analyze it to see success metrics such as trend in year-over-year growth in new customers, cases sold, merchandising category such as grocery, etc. This analysis can be done by creating column or bar charts which show both a spike and lift in traffic or conversions during periods when the marketing campaigns ran. So, I can quickly correlate the lift or drop in performance to when the marketing campaigns started and when they ended. I can also use advanced analytics functions such as vLookup or pivot charts to associate email addresses to those customers who didn't purchase so my marketing team can run re-targeting campaigns against them. Or, deduplicate function to remove duplicates and extract a unique set of customer ids and names so I can run business intelligence reports against them.

Cons

Microsoft Excel uses significant ram of a computer when number of rows being analyzes is in thousands. Or, if multiple files of Excel are open simultaneously. In such scenarios, Excel crashes and all open files close. It has to be restarted and not all changes are saved in backup versions of the files. Unless Excel being used is part of the cloud version of Microsoft Office also called Office 360. Similar challenges are faced when using advanced analysis functions like vLookup. When using vLookup against thousands of rows and multiple columns, Excel hogs more ram and slows down cpu so whole system freezes.

Review for Excel

Reviewed on 31/10/2020

Excel is one of the most widely used office software since the popularization of personal computers,...

Excel is one of the most widely used office software since the popularization of personal computers, and it is also one of the most successful applications under the Microsoft windows platform. To say that it is an ordinary software may not be enough to describe its power. In fact, in many companies like mine, excel has completely become a production tool and plays an important role in the core work of various departments. No matter which industry the user is in, or whether the company has implemented an information system, as long as they need to deal with data, excel is almost the best choice.

Pros

1. It can quickly produce a relatively standardized form (that is, the vertical lines are aligned).

2. It is very convenient to perform calculations (formulas or functions), statistics (classification and summary, filtering, etc.) on the data in the table, and convert the data in the table into the form of a chart.

3. Only multiple cells can be merged, but one cell cannot be split. This shortcoming brings great inconvenience when making tables.

Therefore, if you only need the appearance of the table under normal circumstances (such as making a personal resume), it is made with Word, but if you often need to calculate and count the data in the table, you should use Excel, although functions and formulas can also be used in Word, they are very troublesome.

I have experienced using Excel and database to manage data. If you want to compare, I think the advantage of Excel lies in its ease of use, while its disadvantage lies in concurrency, capacity, and speed.

The main functions and characteristics of Excel spreadsheet is a kind series of office software, which realizes the data processing of the forms in daily life and work. Through a friendly man-machine interface and easy-to-learn intelligent operation, it enables users to easily have practical, beautiful, and personalized real-time tables. It is a right-hand man in work and life.

Cons

Due to the constraints of Excel's own conditions, the Excel accounting processing system has fewer functions and can only handle some common businesses. It is incapable of handling the complex business of large enterprises. Therefore, it is only suitable for small and medium-sized enterprises. Professional maintenance is more difficult.

Although the source files are open, easy to operate, and convenient to maintain, for some small and medium-sized enterprises and their accounting personnel with weak computer application foundation, there is no maintenance by technical personnel. It is easy to fall into trouble when there is a change. Therefore, the Excel accounting processing system is suitable for small and medium-sized accounting personnel with certain computer application capabilities.

MS Excel is overall a very great tool. I have been using this software for the past six years. It helped throughout my academic period, and I would give main credit to this software as it made my life easier. I would highly recommend this software to the youngster, and I would suggest they watch beginner videos of this software on youtube.

Pros

Excel has entirely different features, and it eventually substitutes some manual procedures like calculating on excel sheets are much simpler and safer than calculating manually. It helps me in managing my data and keeps my records on a day today. There are a lot of facilities through which I can perform multitasking through this software. I can work on two or multiple sheets at the same time. Functions like SUM, AVERAGE, COUNT, MIN, MAX, and many others have played a vital role in saving time and making work more efficient. In short, MS Excel is a versatile software.

Cons

Excel needs a user with proper knowledge about its features and tools. Initially, I could not make the most use of Excel because of a lack of knowledge about the tools and not being familiar with its features, so the process of doing and completing the task was much more complex and sophisticated for me. So at first, it could be a little difficult for the beginners.

I started using Microsoft Excel 27 years ago when it was installed on the computer via 6 Philips disk and from that time until now I have not used any other program in all the fields I worked in and used it in all its versions. Quick tables and invoice design in all its forms. I even used it to make small stickers to put on products. It is indeed a comprehensive program for those who learn it and know all its secrets. Graphs are also available in a professional manner and can be easily dealt with, a feature that you can find in a complete program that specializes only in graphs and buy it For a high amount, either Excel provides it as one of the features I have done a lot of work through Which made me distinguished in my work and in front of my managers because I was professional in it and everyone came to me to help him in making the schedules that take with them in other programs a lot of time I was accomplishing in Excel in minutes

Pros

I liked the Microsoft Excel program, that it is flexible and easy to learn and work on. It is an excellent place for making tables and electronic tables that contain simple and complex equations, which makes me able to make a simple accounting program in record time and complete tables and invoices in minutes, and the graphs can be inserted very easily and simply Also, the file contains several pages, and new pages can be added endlessly. The pages can be linked to equations between them easily. When saving the work, it can be saved with several extensions to open it in other programs such as the pdf extension and many great features in the program

Cons

I can assure you that there are no downsides to Microsoft Excel. There was a simple note, which is to change the work format when opening the file with old, previous versions.

Easy to keep your data in an organized way for quick analysis.

Pros

Has integrated plotting routines and is very easy to use with math functions performed on cells. Can also be used for organizing non numeric inputs too. Has several choices on types of plots that can be selected in order to fit the data type be used. Once data is inputted analysis is easy to implement. Using formulas is also easy on all of the data or any portion of the data, all you have to do is select the portion of the data you want the formula to act on. If you have trouble finding the ways to use the formula or selecting how to input the formula you can just do a search online for the question you have on how to implement it. It's that easy, since Excel is so widely used. It is also great for inputting data from other software programs in various formats. Also it is easy to copy and paste the charts and plots into other software programs which makes it easy to back up the point you are making in any report or research you are generating.

Cons

Can be a little hard to format types of data at times since Excel wants to truncate leading and trailing zeros in numbers inputted. Some programs will not allow you to copy and paste charts or graphs into them but the list of programs that will not allow this is short. Also some programs have certain data formats that are not compatible with with Excel data formats , this is not a big deal though as most data can be reformatted for Excel to accept with a little effort. Also the plotting routines are a bit inflexible at times and it can be frustrating when you want display your data in a certain way.

It is a wonderful software to work with numbers and simplify the work

It has helped me in my daily work because it helps me to present the amounts of projects by companies of large macros to something easier and simplified is really recommended because the large number of tools they offer we can adapt to our needs

Pros

Excel is a wonderful tool offered by Microsoft to simplify life for all of us who work with numbers, it has a great variety of formulas that according to what we need we can use it, with excel I have been able to simplify a large database in just what I need either inserting a table or a dynamic table, I can also represent in graphics some information that requires presenting to a third party, otherwise if you only need to see an information you can use the filters that allows you to filter the information by numbers, some keyword, the beginning of a sentence, colors among others its use is very relevant, it is an excellent tool if we learn to know it is not at all complicated and with its daily use we can get to know it better

Cons

The difficulty I feel in excel is that if you want to get more out of it you should take a basic course at least to start learning now if what you want is to manage macros you should know programming, not anyone can perform macros in excel is necessary previous knowledge, another against would be that depending on the amount of information handled the program can become a bit slow and heavy in the PC, you have to be aware because sometimes the option of automatic formulas is deactivated and passed to manual and therefore, if you add new numbers or numbers, these are not updated, but excel is usually great for your daily use
