Rollbar
About Rollbar
Rollbar is the leading continuous code improvement platform that proactively discovers, predicts, and remediates errors with real-time AI-assisted workflows. With Rollbar, developers continually improve their code and constantly innovate rather than spending time monitoring, investigating, and debugging.
The Rollbar solution comprises of:
- Software Development Kits (SDKs) for all major programming languages, which are open source and used for instrumenting applications to detect and report errors to the Rollbar platform. Instrumenting is easy and takes minutes to complete. The SDKs come with various configuration options including for data scrubbing to prevent sensitive data from being sent to Rollbar.
- A proprietary fingerprinting and analysis engine, which receives, processes, and makes sense of billions of error occurrences per month, and significantly boosts the signal-to-noise ratio, a common challenge in monitoring. The error grouping feature can be customized to meet your specific needs.
- A full-featured workflow application that notifies developers of errors instantly as they occur, through the web-based real-time error feed interface, or via alerts sent to tools like Slack, PagerDuty, or email. Tasks can be distributed by assigning errors to specific members of a team. Rollbar comes with extensive integrations with other software tools that comprise your complete software development workflow, including Github, Jenkins, JIRA, and more, and a full-featured API.
- A data collection engine that brings together all data useful for debugging purposes, formatted in ways that save the developer time. The data and contextual metadata includes stack traces, request parameter values, local variable values, and various metrics such as users impacted, browser, region, OS, and more. If you enable source control integration, you also get links from the stack trace to relevant lines of code in your code repository, as well as useful information on deployments relating to the error. There is also a SQL-like interface called Rollbar Query Language (RQL) for custom data analysis.
- Various features for data protection, security, and privacy, and easier administration in large organizations. This includes encryption at rest, enterprise-grade audit and security controls, SAML SSO for login, SCIM provisioning, and more. Rollbar is compliant with stringent industry standards, such as HIPAA in the U.S., EU GDPR, and is ISO27001 and CSA STAR certified.

Exceptional error monitoring

Rollbar allows us to be proactive about our bugs. We frequently get notified about production incidents, the notifications come straight through to our developer Slack channel and we can quickly debug using the captured information and put out a fix before a customer ever notices. If they ever reach out to us, it always makes us look really good when we can say that we already know and we've fixed it.
Pros
I love how easy it is to drop Rollbar into an application. We deployed Rollbar in under an hour and the event lots started streaming in immediately. Within a day it had helped us solve several production issues.
Cons
If you have a larger project, or a particularly chatty application, Rollbar's event limits can quickly push you up into a higher pricing plan and if you don't pay up it will start swallowing errors silently until the quota renews at the end of the month.

Easy to use and setup

Brilliant, literally set it and capture you errors.
Brilliant, literally set it and capture you errors.
Pros
I've used a lot of error tracking tools in the past but I was really pleased with Rollbar.
For node applications it's very well laid out, keys are provided for you server and your client setup.
Errors are tracked and logged for your application, broken down by which side the error occured.
And if an error has been recurring you can track it and log it easily, plus the emails give a good breakdown of the error from the code side.
Cons
None at present, I may like the UI navigation to be improved so you can administer the setup quicker but once it's in place it kind of runs itself.

Not Very Helpful
Reviewed on 10/07/2020
Pros
It's great that it logs errors. And the grouping of errors is sometimes helpful.
Cons
That searching for anything other than the unique identifier is almost impossible. Found a work-around using RQL, but that is sometimes hours later by the time the RQL database is populated with recent errors... so basically, we have to reproduce and error and then hurry and click the errors at the top and hope we can maybe find it. It's worse than logging errors to a text file honestly... cause at least I could search that in a reasonable amount of time.

Great Error reporting with minimal downtime
Reviewed on 16/07/2020
Pros
I have enjoyed how easy Rollbar is to set up with Ruby, Javascript and Ruby on Rails. Their libraries made it painless to set up and already start reporting errors. I don't know that half of the errors caught by Rollbar would have been fixed in the short turn around time as if we didn't have Rollbar. Rollbar is also user friendly and they are constantly putting up more features. My favorite feature is with a given error they include the stack-trace in my code and who wrote the code that is erroring out. This is very useful for debugging.
Cons
In short the downtime. Albeit very minimal, there have been some days I can remember that Rollbar was down for more than an hour and if I recall correctly a whole work day. These times it made it hard not to worry if anything is breaking or throwing errors. For this reason I have enjoyed having another performance monitoring product.
