Sketch

Product design tool to create, test & collaborate on ideas

About Sketch

Sketch is a product design platform, which helps businesses create, test, and collaborate on ideas with team members using color variables, layouts, shared libraries, vector editing tools, plugins, and more. Designers can zoom into designs for precise editing at the pixel level, export, or share assets on a drag-and-drop interface, and set up resizing rules based on screen sizes according to requirements.

Using Sketch, organizations can create icons, customize designs' topography or font, and use shortcuts, mathematical operators, and the shorthand method to toggle grids or layout views and adjust or resize a column's width and color. Designers can build product design prototypes by linking various parts and maintain a library of symbols or text and layer styles to share them with relevant collaborators. The software allows businesses to store designs in a cloud-based workspace and preview prototypes for user research and testing purposes. Contributors can also edit, inspect, and comment on designs or assets and browse documents and projects on a centralized platform.

Sketch facilitates integration with various third-party applications such as Zeplin, Lokalise, Overlay, Flinto, Avocode, Abstract, and more. Organizations can also add or remove contributors, manage finances, view finances, and download assets for production via a web browser.

I'll be sticking with Sketch for a while. Right now it covers all of my needs and is an easy handoff to others along the line, including developers.

Pros

Sketch is an easy-to-use (once you learn it) app that is available ON Mac instead of a cloud-based app. Which is definitely my preference. Also available on Windows. I LOVE the plug-ins. As mentioned it can be a learning curve but it's a great alternative to Photoshop for some. Won't be for everybody and depends on what tasks you're doing of course.

Cons

I was convinced to switch to Sketch and admittedly the learning curve was a bit tight.

I also solve my web design & development service. When I get any client this time they want a live demo of how to look there website. This time I create a prototype using Sketch. I can create very fast and easily from here.

Pros

Our company offers a full suite of IT Services Like web design & Development, Graphics Design, also digital marketing, so our prototyping needs to run and then hand off to my UX counterparts. Sketch allows us to manage both ends of the spectrum and everything in between, ensuring consistency and collaboration between team members. They then take those and turn them into high-fidelity designs that we use to test with customers. Sketch works great for this.

Cons

Sometimes keyboard shortcuts are not the same as photoshop. This system needs to improve I think. Because maximum designer uses photoshop that why you design your keyboard shortcut like photoshop then much easier for your user.

The reason why people are switching to sketch from other software is that unlike Adobe illustrator, Sketch is designed by designer for desgner for digital interfaces specifically. The UI and tools are designed in way that they are easier to use while the plugins help users to go into the detail of a particular action.

Pros

One of the main reason why people choose sketch over other similar software is its plugins. Plugins link Autolayout, Magic mirror and Git sketch makes your life easier. It can be easily connected to Invision for easy prototyping and presentation. It is also extremely easy to learn sketch if you are trying to switch from Adobe illustrator or photoshop.

Cons

I find that Sketch is almost perfect while there are a couple of things that can be improved like the software is only available on Mac OS and not on windows which makes it difficult to share editable files with some clients and freelancers. Unlike Figma, sketch which doesnt allow to access your file from anywhere and also doesnt allow multiple people to work on a same file.

Can make beautiful labels when I set aside large chunks of time. I"m not a graphic professional, so it fills the gap for me when I need something that isn't to elaborate rather than paying a graphic designer.

Pros

Mac Compatible and cheaper than competition.

Cons

Steep learning curve. I need to convert files to vector once in a while. Fine for occasional use.

Alternatives Considered

Adobe Illustrator and Inkscape

Reasons for Switching to Sketch

Adobe - too expensive for rare use Inkscape was glitchy and unreliable - the converted files weren't working.
