## Overview

### Key benefits of CodeSession

See how candidates actually think — not just whether they can pass a test. The biggest benefit CodeSession delivers is a fundamentally better hiring signal. When you work through a problem with a candidate in a shared environment, you observe the behaviors that predict real job performance: how they ask clarifying questions, how they decompose an unfamiliar problem, how they recover when their first approach doesn't work, and how they communicate their thinking under mild pressure. That's information you simply can't get from a take-home assignment or a one-sided whiteboard session.

Eliminate the cat-and-mouse game of AI-era hiring. AI tools have made it trivially easy for candidates to generate plausible-looking code in isolation. Asynchronous coding challenges are increasingly unreliable as a signal. CodeSession's live, collaborative format shifts the evaluation to exactly the skills that can't be outsourced: real-time reasoning, communication, and collaborative problem-solving. You're not trying to catch anyone cheating. You're just spending time working together, which tells you everything.

Replace your patchwork interview stack with one purpose-built tool. Most teams start with something stitched together: a shared Google Doc, screen sharing on Zoom, a whiteboarding link in a separate tab. Every handoff is friction: for your interviewers, for your candidates, and for your ability to maintain a consistent process. CodeSession consolidates the collaborative editor, whiteboard, and take-home delivery into a single environment that opens from one link, with nothing to install.

Send a link. That's it. Candidate experience matters. A clunky technical setup before an interview creates anxiety and reflects poorly on your team. With CodeSession, your candidate receives a URL. They click it. They're in a clean, professional coding environment in seconds: no account, no install, no IT support required. The simpler the setup, the more you see their actual skills.

A consistent process, every time. Custom code templates and whiteboard templates let you standardize what every candidate sees at the start of an interview. Whether you're one recruiter conducting occasional interviews or a recruiting team running parallel pipelines across multiple roles, everyone starts from the same baseline. That consistency makes cross-candidate comparison meaningful.

Your whole team can participate without adding cost. CodeSession pricing is based on interview volume, not seat count. You can add every engineer, hiring manager, and recruiter in your organization to your account without paying per user. That makes it practical to involve the full team in hiring decisions and to rotate interviewers without administrative overhead.

Permanent session history for better debrief conversations. Every CodeSession is stored forever at a permanent link. After an interview, your team can revisit the candidate's approach and have a grounded debrief conversation instead of relying on notes taken under pressure. Sessions are retained regardless of plan changes.

Start free. Scale when you need to. The Free Forever plan is genuinely free, with no credit card required, and gives small teams and individual hiring managers a professional interviewing tool with no commitment. When hiring picks up, session packs let you buy exactly what you need without locking into a subscription. When hiring is ongoing, monthly or annual subscriptions offer the best per-session economics. The model grows with you rather than charging you for capacity you're not using.

### "Learn what it's really like to work with a candidate" — 5.0/5

> **Ham** | *22 June 2026* | Internet | Recommendation rating: 9.0/10
>
> **Pros**: CodeSession provides a no-frills interview experience that allows candidates and interviewers to focus on the stuff that matters: The code, the conversation, and the bigger ideas. Let's face it. Hiring software engineers is trickier than ever and getting enough signal from an interview process can be next to impossible. With the rise of AI I find it even harder to cut through the noise.

I found that live coding sessions with CodeSession give me the best signal while being mindful of the candidate's time (and my own\!). I've experimented with take-home questions but found them hard to design well and evaluate reliably (CodeSession offers take-home questions those, too, if that's your jam). With live coding sessions I can experience what it feels like to work with a candidate face-to-face. I can see how they think, how they articulate their thoughts, how they shape their code, how they ask questions.

Using CodeSession doesn't need a ton of explanation. It's simple to get started, both for me and the candidate. We can dive right into the interview without a lot of ceremony. I pick a template, invite the candidate, they click the link, and we're ready to roll. We can jam on code together, hop over into a whiteboard, it's all right there.

I like that CodeSession doesn't try to be a little bit of everything. It doesn't try to embed video conferencing, chat features, or reinvent digital whiteboards. I can simply get those things elsewhere (or CodeSession conveniently embeds them as with those Miro whiteboards). It's just a fine tool that does it's job, nothing more, nothing less.

Also the pricing is super fair. With the latest update I can now select between a subscription or usage-based pricing (they call it "session packs" I think?).
>
> **Cons**: Please let me upload a user avatar. It would make things just 5% more fun and personal and I don't want to keep looking at that corporate-gray placeholder avatar.
>
> I used CodeSession extensively when interviewing software engineers at Stack Overflow and have used it (or processes heavily inspired by CodeSession, but executed more poorly) in a few places after.

### "A must have for straightforward code interviews for hiring software developers." — 5.0/5

> **Kyle** | *22 June 2026* | Computer Software | Recommendation rating: 10.0/10
>
> **Pros**: Easy to setup and use sessions as an interviewer. Keeps the interviewee focused on writing code without worrying about squiggles and build errors. I want to learn what \*they\* think - not what an IDE or parser thinks about code. I've had other interviewers use Google Docs to write code and it's very hard/distracting when proper tabbing or syntax highlighting don't work how you'd expect.
>
> **Cons**: There's not a lot to grip about here. The product is pretty simple, and intentionally so. I've never heard a complaint from an interviewee. Some folks want stuff like autocomplete out of an IDE, but it's more diagnostically helpful to see what code potential teammates actually write and how they reason about what they're writing.
>
> I've conducted about 50 interviews with engineers, for both algorithm and architecture all on CodeSession and would rate it highly.

### "A solid pairing tool that nails the basics" — 4.0/5

> **Chris** | *22 June 2026* | Information Technology & Services | Recommendation rating: 8.0/10
>
> **Pros**: The real-time collaborative editor is genuinely excellent. I run remote technical interviews a few times a week, and the latency is so low it feels like the candidate and I are sitting at the same keyboard. Syntax highlighting works across every language I've thrown at it, and being able to spin up a shareable session in two clicks has saved me an enormous amount of friction. It's great for the core job of "two people editing the same code at the same time".
>
> **Cons**: The mobile experience could use some polish; it's clearly built desktop-first, which is fine for me but a little awkward when a candidate joins from their phone. I'd also love more IDE-style smarts like jump-to-definition and richer autocomplete, which I lean on heavily in my day-to-day editor. None of these are dealbreakers, though.
>
> CodeSession.io has become a core part of my interviewing workflow, and for the price it delivers a lot of value. The core part of the product offering (collaborative coding) is executed extraordinarily well. The rough edges (mobile support and the in-browser editor are limiting) aren't deal breakers, and the fact that the site is clearly well maintained is a big plus.

Suggestion: look into a VS Code extension. It'd be cool to run it through a full editor instead of in the browser.

### "An easy to use way to perform better tech interviews" — 5.0/5

> **Gervasio** | *22 June 2026* | Computer Software | Recommendation rating: 10.0/10
>
> **Pros**: It solidly deliver on its promise: an easy to use tool to better perform technical interviews. It stays out of the way.
>
> **Cons**: Some candidates expected to be able to run their code, so we started telling them about the tool before sharing the link. I suppose a better candidate onboarding when they click the link?
>
> Super positive, it's one of these tools that earn the place in your workflow and become transparent.

### "Better collaboration with less friction" — 5.0/5

> **Meredith** | *24 June 2026* | Computer Software | Recommendation rating: 8.0/10
>
> **Pros**: It's easy to share with interviewees and for them to quickly jump into the interview itself. Little to no time is needed to explain CodeSession. Creating templates also allows me to focus on certain objectives or skills while also giving context for the interviewee through the code itself. This allows me to be more consistent in evaluating candidates because there's less variability in how questions are framed and communicated.
>
> **Cons**: At times, I wished for more IDE features but I haven't experienced this being more than an inconvenience.
>
> Prior to CodeSession, we unfortunately used a shared document or screenshared the candidate's text editor. This is such a solid improvement over those workflows. Not only does it improve the technical interview itself, but it allows collaboration in a way that is a preview for the culture in an organization for all participants.

Interviewers and candidates share a real-time code editor and whiteboard with nothing to install and no candidate account required.\n\nAt the core of CodeSession is a synchronized code editor where both parties can type simultaneously, with changes appearing instantly for all participants. The editor includes syntax highlighting, auto-formatting, and language-specific configuration across more than 40 programming and scripting languages: Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, Go, Rust, Java, C++, C#, SQL variants, Ruby, Swift, and infrastructure formats like Dockerfile, YAML, and NGINX among them.\n\nAn embedded whiteboard is available in every session without needing a third-party tool. Interviewers use it for system design discussions, architecture diagramming, or sketching out problem structures. Custom whiteboard templates can be prepared in advance to standardize exercises across candidates. Similarly, custom code templates let teams create reusable starting environments pre-populated with boilerplate, instructions, or scaffolding so every candidate begins from the same baseline.\n\nFor asynchronous evaluation, CodeSession supports take-home test delivery. Candidates receive a link to a pre-configured coding environment and complete the challenge on their own schedule. Every session, live or take-home, is stored permanently at a unique, shareable URL regardless of plan level, enabling structured debrief conversations and cross-candidate comparisons long after the interview ends.\n\nOn the technical side, SSO is included on all plans including the free tier. Candidate access is link-based and session-scoped, meaning candidates see only the session they were invited to. Because interviews happen inside CodeSession rather than over a screen share, candidates' desktops, personal files, and other applications stay private. The platform is fully browser-based with no desktop client required for interviewers or candidates.\n\nCodeSession offers two purchasing models. Session packs are one-time purchases valid for 12 months: 20 sessions for $99, 60 sessions for $249, and 150 sessions for $499. Subscription plans run from a genuine free-forever tier at 2 interviews per month, through Starter at $59 per month for 15 interviews, Growth at $149 for 40, Scale at $349 for 100, and Enterprise at $899 for unlimited interviews. Annual billing saves approximately 15%. Critically, all plans include unlimited users and the full feature set - pricing scales with interview volume, not headcount.\n\nNo implementation project is required to get started. Most teams conduct their first interview within 15 minutes of signing up. Session setup means selecting a language template, optionally customizing the starting code or whiteboard, and copying a link to send the candidate. No IT involvement and no ATS integration are needed to get moving.","image":"https://gdm-catalog-fmapi-prod.imgix.net/ProductScreenshot/11c25cc4-d241-4bb6-bd10-2741524a2c95.png","url":"https://www.getapp.sg/software/2097990/codesession","@type":"SoftwareApplication","@id":"https://www.getapp.sg/software/2097990/codesession#software","applicationCategory":"BusinessApplication","publisher":{"@id":"https://www.getapp.sg/#organization"},"aggregateRating":{"@type":"AggregateRating","bestRating":5,"ratingCount":5,"ratingValue":4.8},"offers":{"price":"0","@type":"Offer","priceCurrency":"USD"},"operatingSystem":"Cloud"},{"@type":"BreadcrumbList","itemListElement":[{"name":"Home","position":1,"item":"/","@type":"ListItem"},{"name":"Pre-employment Testing Software","position":2,"item":"/directory/827/pre-employment-testing/software","@type":"ListItem"},{"name":"CodeSession","position":3,"item":"/software/2097990/codesession","@type":"ListItem"}],"@id":"https://www.getapp.sg/software/2097990/codesession#breadcrumblist"}]}
